I was delighted to learn that my shot Pilots won Best Single Picture – Nature, Sealife, Wildlife at the 2020 Travel Photographer of the Year Awards!

It has gained some publicity since, including being picked up by National Geographic Spain and several international news outlets. Congrats to all the winners and please check out the winning gallery by clicking here– some really impressive photography displayed there and an absolute honour for an amateur like me to be surrounded by such work and talent!

Don’t worry the fishes are fine! They’re pilot fishes – or to be precise in this case Golden Trevallies. They help the shark navigate and keep clean in exchange for scraps and protection. Lemon sharks can grow upwards of 3m (11ft) in length, weigh about 100kg (220lbs) and they have very sharp teeth as shown in this picture shot at the Bistro, Beqa Channel, Fiji.
