The Eyes, Chico

Mafia Island, Tanzania

Photo Gallery

Mantis shrimps are famous for the punch they pack, which can be devastating for a mask, or a camera lens port. Their eyes are some of the most complex set of peepers in the entire animal kingdom. Each contains 12 photoreceptors that allow them to sense different types of colour. For comparison, human eyes typically contain three types of light-sensitive cells for seeing red, blue, and green.
