Nap Time

Mafia Island, Tanzania

Photo Gallery

This baby cuttlefish is resting under a tiny leaf on the ocean floor. Cuttlefish are perhaps best known for their ability to mimic the colours, shapes and textures of their surroundings. They can change colour almost instantly, even as they swim through different corals or rocks. What’s more, is the coloration isn’t necessarily static. They can change color in rapid patterns that make it look like ripples of color are rolling over their bodies. The mesmerizing “light show” effect is also a strategy that can help cuttlefish catch prey.
