Lake Mburo National Park, Lyantonde, Uganda

Photo Gallery

Scientific consensus on why zebras are striped has not yet been reached but it starts to seem that an important factor has been deterrence to flies, particularly tsetse, who are important disease vectors for the species. Studies have shown that flies tend to land on single-colour surfaces, including all-white or all-black, but they avoid striped surfaces. Of course, it also helps to confuse predators. More zebras here.
